Experienced Practitioner’s Pathway

Current SOA and CAS members who have demonstrated expertise and a minimum of three years of substantial experience in the field of ERM by December 31, 2008 may be eligible to earn the CERA credential through an application process and the successful completion of a two-day seminar.


Qualified SOA and CAS members interested in pursuing the Experienced Practitioner’s Pathway should meet several of the following criteria:

  • An individual who has performed work in the field of enterprise risk management at a senior level
  • An individual who has advanced the actuarial profession within the enterprise risk management field
  • An individual with significant visibility in the enterprise risk management field
  • An individual who has made substantial contributions to practice in the enterprise risk management field
  • Experience as a risk officer for an entity or line of business
  • An individual who has served as a key contributor to an organization's risk committee
  • Experience managing interactions between multiple risks
  • An individual who has developed or implemented methodology for monitoring, measuring and management of risk in an enterprise risk management environment
  • An individual whose academic research has resulted in practical industry enterprise risk management applications

Applying for the CERA Credential Experienced Practitioner’s Pathway

Current SOA and CAS members who are interested in applying for the Experienced Practitioner's Pathway should submit:

  • A current resume, including job titles and length of positions held
  • A cover letter (limited to two pages) explaining the breadth and depth of ERM experience related to each of the specific criteria noted above
  • The name and contact information of a professional reference who is familiar with your enterprise risk management work

The resume and cover letter should be e-mailed to for consideration. Members are reminded that they are subject to the Code of Professional Conduct when compiling and submitting their application.

Please include your name on each page of your submission. The CERA Experienced Practitioner’s Pathway will be open to applicants through December 31, 2008.

Due to the volume of applications and the consideration given to each, the current response time is generally longer than the originally anticipated six to eight weeks. Your patience in awaiting a reply is appreciated.

Upon acceptance, candidates will be required to participate in a two-day seminar, currently planned for November 2008 and April 2009, in order to receive the credential.

Credentialed actuaries from actuarial organizations with a Mutual Recognition Agreement with the SOA

Credentialed actuaries from these organizations interested in applying for the Experienced Practitioner’s Pathway will first need to apply to the SOA for membership under the relevant Mutual Recognition Agreement. If SOA membership is granted, these individuals may apply for the Experienced Practitioner’s Pathway outlined above.
